Modern Plagues:

Current and dynamic pandemic infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis and AIDS, continue to menace public health and re-emerging and newly emerging infectious diseases, such as avian influenza, have an incomparable pandemic potential for today’s world. In addition, many currently treatable infectious diseases are now becoming resistant to the antimicrobial drugs available to effectively treat them and, along with the continuing threat from bioterrorism, compound human danger from modern plagues.

This module provides participants with an opportunity to examine and understand the factors associated with the transnational spread of infectious diseases, explore the current potential for pandemic infections, develop a strategic insight into the prevention and management of pandemic events and the multi-agency support available from local, national, regional and international services and organisations.

This module will use a “blended” method of delivery.  Fifty percent of the module will be delivered on line using a variety of learning activities and the remainder of the module will delivered in a face to face format.  The assessment for the module requires you to devise and present a framework for their analysis of the potential threat from pandemic infectious disease write a critical evaluation of the potential threat and the current strategies for their prevention and management.
